digital health maven dot edu – episode 26:  April 6, 2021

In this episode, I take a look at how the global digital health landscape evolved over Q1 2021 and continue to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the market.

In my last episode, I had three areas of focus: the behavioral changes ushered in by the COVID-19 virus, the ongoing revenue problem facing digital health companies and hospitals, as virtualization takes hold and the rise of the global data lake.

In this podcast, I’ll focus on the digital health investment/exit surge, talk a bit about which digital behaviors and trends could be most sticky post-pandemic and touch briefly on the ongoing revenue problem for health provider organizations.

digital health maven dot edu – episode 25:  December 30, 2020

In this episode, I take a look back at an eventful 2020 and provide some thoughts about what 2021 may bring to the global digital health market. This lecture covers  three themes:

1. The COVID-19 Nudge: COVID 19 ushered in a radical behavioral shift in terms of how people and institutions have viewed and adopted digital health solutions. Will it persist?

2. The Revenue Problem: 2020 has created a new class of winners in digital health: firms developing virtual care solutions. Yet, the old problems of reimbursement and sustainability remain.

3. The Rise of the Global Data Lake: With the rise of remote care, increasing adoption of digital trackers and the continued push for value over volume, data has become even more important in healthcare. How will the growing health data lake affect privacy, health security and care delivery in 2021?

digital health maven dot edu – episode 24:  October 23, 2020

Over the past few episodes, I have been focusing a lot on a new initiative I launched last year with Denise Pines, president of the Medical Board of California and women’s health expert and champion, called the FemAging Project. The project is designed to educate on the unique health, wellness and well-being issues faced by women over the age of 40. Another goal is to accelerate innovative solutions for their most urgent health concerns.

Denise and I had the opportunity to participate in a virtual Fireside Chat with Natalie Yeadon, co-founder of Impetus Digital. Natalie’s company works with life sciences organizations to drive virtual collaboration engagement and knowledge gathering/transfer.

This podcast features excerpts of our chat with Natalie, focusing on the “why” behind the FemAging Project, surprising insights from our FemAging research and more. To listen to the full program, please click here.

digital health maven dot edu – episode 23:  July 14, 2020

This is a very special episode featuring a conversation between me and Denis Pines. Together we developed two recently published reports: FemAging 2020 and FemAging in the COVID 19 Era.

Denise is president of the Medical Board of California and serves on the Martin Luther King Community Hospital Foundation. She also serves in leadership positions in the California University of Science and Medicine, School of Medicine, the Triple Step Toward the Cure, and is an award-winning marketer and serial entrepreneur, with experience in 10 startups including multimedia companies and foundations.

What is FemAging? Well, FemAging (a term introduced by Denise and I) refers to a trend focusing on the health and wellness needs of mature women — specifically those between the ages of 40 to 65. FemAging 2020 reveals the unique and surprising health, wellness and well-being needs of these women.

It also focuses on how FemAging Tech innovations — solutions such as software, diagnostics, devices, nutraceuticals, wearables, pharmaceuticals, clothing and other products and services developed specifically for women ages 40+ — are not meeting older women’s needs.

The FemAging in the COVID-19 era report focuses on how mature women view the coronavirus crisis as having a long-term — not temporary — but long-term impact on their health and well-being.

For more information about FemAging and FemAging Tech, please visit www.femaging.com where you can download the FemAging 2020 and FemAging in the COVID-19 Era reports, and contact us about this research.

digital health maven dot edu – episode 20:  February 17, 2020

This episode is the first of a three-part research and strategy-based podcast series focusing on the important topic of digital therapeutics.

This episode focuses on the clarity question: What exactly is a digital therapeutic? With an increasing number of startups and other firms describing their products and services as “digital therapeutics” what really matters most?

Is it more important to understand what they are, or what it will take for them to be adopted?

digital health maven dot edu – episode 19:  December 4, 2019

In this episode, I introduce a new three-part research and strategy-based podcast series I’ve developed focusing on the important topic of digital therapeutics.

What is a digital therapeutic? According to the Digital Therapeutics Alliance, they are evidence-based digital solutions featuring high-quality software that — ideally — have been validated by regulatory bodies.

As the digital therapeutics sub-sector has grown it’s faced some key challenges. In this series, which will be published over the next three podcast episodes, I’ll address three of them: clarity, efficacy and commercialization.

digital health maven dot edu – episode 18:  October 22, 2019

This episode is the final installment in a series of research-based lectures focusing on virtual care technologies. As virtual care solutions such as telehealth and mobile, powered by emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, have become more popular, health industry incumbents are asking critical questions about whether they should view virtual care as a threat — or opportunity.

In this podcast, I look at various episodes of care — from urgent care (for example, UTIs and sexually transmitted infections), to behavioral health and wellness — and consider whether there is potential for care delivered in these contexts to be provided in a fully virtual manner.

digital health maven dot edu – episode 3:  November 14, 2018

This episode focuses on the emerging world of digital diagnostics. Innovations in this growing sub-sector of the digital health industry use data, software and devices to hopefully improve the detection and diagnosis of cancer, depression, malaria and other conditions.

Click image to view larger version.

You’ll learn about five key market challenges associated with digital diagnostics, including data diversity (click the image below for an overview of the five challenges discussed in this episode). One key question some are asking is this: are some AI-driven diagnostic solutions ethnically and racially biased?

What does this mean? Well, there are concerns that data sets being used to train digital diagnostic models (for machine and deep learning) are not diverse enough to ensure high accuracy across a range of populations.

This is especially important in the area of skin cancer where not having data about how it presents in dark skinned individuals could make these diagnostic tools not only inaccurate, but potentially life threatening.

Dave Chase: Our Guest on the Digital Health Maven Podcast – Early November 2016

dave_chaseDave Chase is a digital health maven because of the courage he has displayed in fighting against daunting odds to radically transform the U.S. healthcare system from the inside out.

Chase’s primary digital health maven trait is practice bravery (click here to learn about the five traits of digital health mavens).

Chase wears many hats. He’s a respected, founder of Avado, which was purchased by WebMD, and a venture capitalist. While all of these accomplishments are noteworthy, perhaps his most high-impact role is that of a mindset shifter. Recently he has focused on breaking through healthcare’s status quo and warns that simply throwing tech on top of broken processes is a recipe for disaster.

You’ll hear Chase talk about The Big Heist, a new documentary he is executive producing that aims to shine a bright light on how the broken U.S. healthcare system is harming patients and providers — sometimes with fatal results.

The Digital Health Maven Podcast is focused on illustrating how digital health mavens are using their curiosity, thirst for insights, human-centered approach, flexibility and bravery to change health and medicine for the better. The podcast is also designed to uncover how each person’s experiences and perspectives contributes to his or her ability to practice digital health maven traits such as embracing flexibility and cultivating curiosity.

In this episode of the Digital Health Maven Podcast, we focus on the digital health maven trait practice bravery and how this habit can help us achieve amazing things — even against significant and seemingly insurmountable odds.
